Why Choose UCLA for Intestinal Rehabilitation and Transplant?

Our approach has resulted in continued success over the past decade. Recipients of intestinal transplants at UCLA enjoy one of the highest survival rates in the world. Our clinical experience and preventive therapies have led to reduced rates of rejection and fewer viral infections after transplantation. Learn more about our research and trials.

Patients and their families choose us because we offer:

  • Multi-organ transplant expertise: UCLA provides all types of solid-organ transplant, including the liver transplant that some intestinal failure patients need. Because of this expertise, our entire facility's medical teams thoroughly understand the transplant process.
  • Outstanding outcomes combined with personal care: Intestinal transplantation at UCLA offers state-of-the-art care from world-renowned transplant experts, resulting in consistently excellent outcomes.
  • Pediatric-to-adult care in one hospital: We are one of the few U.S. programs offering both adult and pediatric intestinal transplants. We are also one of the few programs providing pediatric and adult care in the same facility. When pediatric intestinal transplant recipients are ready, we have a special program to help them transition to adult care.
  • Personalized medicine: Our care isn't one-size-fits-all. We provide highly personalized patient care, with teams to meet all of your needs and every aspect of care. We also offer support groups for patients before and after transplant. Read more about our approach to care.

Intestinal Failure: What to Expect

Our intestinal rehabilitation and transplant program has developed tried-and-true practices to give patients and their families the right medical options, from evaluation through transplant and beyond.

We carefully assess each patient's intestinal function, based on the length, location and function of the intestine to recommend the right treatment.

For patients with intestinal failure, we will recommend intestinal transplant when appropriate. However, intestinal transplantation is not appropriate for all patients.

We offer other medical and/or surgical treatment options as well, including:

  • Intestinal lengthening procedures
  • Restoring intestinal continuity
  • Intestinal anastomosis/resections (surgery)
  • Nutritional management
  • Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) management
  • Other medical therapies
  • Transplantation
  • Long-term, careful follow-up, incorporating changes in the condition and treatment of the patient over time
