Referral Process for Intestinal Transplantation
The process of deciding if intestinal transplantation is a treatment option for a patient starts with the referral to a transplant team that specializes in these types of transplants. Usually, a patient’s primary physician, gastroenterologist, or surgeon will contact the transplant center directly and provide access to the patient’s medical records and history. Patients can refer themselves directly without going through their primary physician however, as an important aspect of the assessment is the patient’s past medical history, contact with the referring physicians is recommended.
